Greek Mythological Stories

You don't have to be a Greek mythology nerd, but you do need to know a few stories about Greece. From Hercules to Odysseus, The Argonauts, Hermaphrodite, and the Golden Fleece, these stories have something for everyone.

Hercules

Hercules was a Greek god who was born to Zeus, Alcmene and Alcmene. Hera tried to kill him when he was still a child. Hera failed to kill him after he fought and killed serpents and bears. Eurystheus brought Hercules into his life as a penitent. Hercules went through 12 labors in return for his good deeds.

Odysseus

Legendary figure in Greek mythology is Odysseus the hero. He was the king of Ithaca. He gained fame during The Trojan War and established himself as an epic hero when he returned home. He is also noted for being one the most brilliant people in Greek mythology. He was even able to fool Paris into taking Helen.

Hermaphrodite

The Greek mythology describes Hermaphroditus as a handsome boy. He was the son Aphrodite and Hermes. Hermaphroditus grew up to be an excellent lover and father to many beautiful children. Hermaphroditus had a beautiful enough face that Salmacis, the naiad Salmacis, attempted to rape it. Salmacis tried to make Hermaphroditus his forever companion, but the Naiad tried to rape Salmacis.


The Titanomachy

The Titanomachy takes place in Greek mythology. It recounts Zeus's birth in Lydia and the battle with the Titans. Zeus, the ruler over the universe, decided to split the world into three parts. The longest straw was drawn by him. The other two ends of the straw belonged to Gaia and Uranus. Hades, the ruler over the Underworld, had the shortest straw end. Not all Titans were allies with Zeus, his son. In fact, some mythological tales even speak of a separate Titaniad.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus was a mythological figure from ancient Greece. He lived in Ephyra, later to become Corinth. He was the son of Aeolus and Enarete, and was known for his cunning. He is also the father to the legendary Greek hero Odysseus and was considered the smartest man of his day. Sisyphus is also reputedly to have invent the Isthmian Games. This festival was held in honor the sea god Poseidon.

The Golden Fleece

The Golden Fleece of Greek mythology is a legendary object that Jason wanted to possess. Jason believed that if the Fleece could be his, he would be able to regain the throne and become king of Thessaly. The ancient kingdom of Colchis is believed to have the Fleece. It is located today in Georgia.
