In the world religions major, students gain specific knowledge of religions and their ideas through a combination of theoretical and empirical study. They study Greek and Roman religions, early Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. Students also study the Greek language. Many world religions majors double major in English language and history or sociology. Students may be able to complete a departmental honors thesis in a single term, in addition their religious studies classes.


Students must complete a thesis on a foreign language to be eligible for honors in the major. Students must also complete two additional years in a language that is relevant to their field of interest.

Courses

A major or minor in world religions enables students to investigate the role of religion in public affairs. This multidisciplinary study provides students with the tools necessary to critically examine the role religion plays in human life, and to constructively engage with religious diversity. Students will also examine religion's contribution to American identity as well as the relationship between religions and other aspects in American society.

The World Religions major can choose to study courses in early Christianity, Islam or Hinduism. They can also study English, sociology, and history. A world religions major may also choose to complete a departmental honors thesis. Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher to be eligible for this program.
