Indonesian culture has a mix of different religions. The central Java region is largely Muslim. You can find Christian and Islamic universities across the street from one another. Tourists love to visit Hindu temples like Borobudur. Strong family traditions are also a part of Indonesian culture.

Islam

Islam is the dominant religion in Indonesia. Most Indonesian Muslims are Sunni. However, there is a small percentage of Shia Muslims living in Jakarta. And there are approximately 400,000 Ahmadi Muslims. Indonesia is a secular Islamic state, although 85 percent of Indonesians believe in Islam. Only six official religions are recognised by Indonesia's Constitution. Most Indonesians are more attached to their nationality than their religious beliefs.

Gamelan

Gamelan is the name for an Indonesian orchestra that plays traditional music. The orchestra is mostly composed of percussion instruments but can also include wind instruments and strings. The ensemble also includes dancers. The instruments are typically placed in a specific pattern on a floor and include three types double-sided drums, an xylophone and a two-stringed violin.


Batik

Batik is an important part of Indonesian culture. It is a centuries-old art form that has been used to blend different cultures. According to UNESCO, cultural inheritance includes more than artifacts and monuments. It also includes oral traditions and social practices as well as traditional craft skills. These cultural assets are vital for the preservation of cultural diversity, especially in the age of globalization.

Ramadan

Ramadan is celebrated in Indonesia by Muslims in many different ways. Megibung is the Bali ritual used by Muslims to welcome the holy month. The name comes from gibung, which means "sharing". The ritual involves sitting together in groups and sharing meals. The ritual has existed in Indonesia for centuries, and has been kept largely unchanged throughout the country.

Traditional games

Gobak Sodor, one of Indonesia's most beloved traditional games, is a very popular one. This is a team-based game where the players must draw boxes on the ground, then use one foot to walk from one box to another. This game is also known as Galah Asin in some regions. It is still played in various ceremonies in Indonesia today.
