There are many benefits to believing in many gods. This type of religion avoids many issues associated with monotheism like omnipresence, evil, and so on. People who practice polytheism have a lower tolerance for other gods. Both of these issues can be avoided by practicing polytheism better than monotheism.
Monotheism
Monotheistic religions emphasize the uniqueness of God. The Mosaic documents were the foundation of the monotheistic religion in Israel. From multiple gods believed in, the concept of one God was born.
Polytheism
Polytheism is the belief in many gods. Although often confused with paganism or polytheism, it is a separate category. Polytheistic religions may worship all gods equally while others place gods according to hierarchical order. Each one of these gods has different powers and may not be able to grant all the followers' desires.
Henotheism
Henotheism is also known as polytheism. It holds that there are many gods. While henotheists do not deny the existence of other deities, they do believe that there is only one primary deity. The Greek words 'heise', meaning one, and 'theos, meaning God are the origins of the term henotheism. Henotheism differs from monotheism in that the belief in multiple gods is a personal choice, rather than a religious obligation.
Pantheism
Pantheism refers to a philosophy that believes there are multiple gods. This philosophy emphasizes science and inquiry. They believe that knowledge of the universe can lead to understanding God. This philosophy does not require the belief in an afterlife nor strict rituals. This philosophy is common among many non-Christian religions.
Animism
Animism is a belief in many different gods, or spirits. Animists believe in interconnectedness between all things, including humans, animals, or the elements. They believe everything is spiritual, but not all spirits have the same characteristics. While pantheists believe that everything has a single, unifying spiritual essence, animists believe that everything has many different spirits, each of which has a distinct personality. Animists consider themselves to be part of nature and equal with other forces.
Plant deities
Aztecs worshiped plant deities such as Mayahuel the goddess of maguey. The deity is thought to have the blood in the sap from this plant. Centzon Totochtin refers to her feeding 400 rabbits.
Polytheistic rulers
Polytheism is not a rigid system. It is a flexible framework that articulates local cults within regional and supraregional contexts. Contrary to monotheism which has a fixed set gods, polytheism doesn't have one. Scholars tend to deny that polytheism is an evolutionary stage. They argue that multiple gods are indicative of cultural inequalities.
