Polytheism and Monotheism

the world religions

All atheists can be polytheists

Polytheism allows for a deeper critique of religion. It recognizes not all deities are equal. While some polytheists specialize in worshiping one deity exclusively, others worship several deities at different times. Monotheists lament the inconsistent nature of polytheism. However, polytheists are open-minded to different beliefs.

Atheism is like every other belief system. There are pros as well as cons. While there is disagreement among scholars about the depth of polytheism within atheists, others assert that all atheists believe only in one god.

Our intercessors with Allah are the Idols

This dangerous belief is that idols act as intercessors to Allah. This belief is based in the mistaken notion that Allah can be found in one place. The only way to worship Allah is through Allah, and worshiping an idol will not do that.

The Quran warns of idolatry and says that idolaters believe independently in intercession. They believe the idols can be effective, even if Allah does not give them permission.

They are living religions

Polytheists are living religions that focus on understanding the relationship between gods and humans. These religions have often been associated with the ancient world, and they have evolved into monotheistic societies. For example, the ancient Greek and Roman cultures included gods in their cultic lives.

While polytheists may have different beliefs and practices than others, they share some common traits. Most polytheistic religious practices have their roots in local culture. These communities may be able to withstand genocide and colonization in some regions.

They face the exact same modernity problems as monotheists

Modernity has brought polytheists the same problems that monotheists. Monotheism’s evolutionary claims and alleged historical unpredictability should be approached with some skepticism. Members of indigenous polytheistic traditions need to be careful about aligning themselves with such claims. They should be asking themselves if they believe that their beliefs will change the world in real time.

Monotheism was born out of rival groups seeking authority. It wasn't a triumph for one over the others. The golah community was forced to adopt strict monotheistic ideas, which led to delegitimization of its gods as well as a loss of community claim over the land.
