
Ares is one the Greek gods and the first son Zeus and Hera. Although he is not favored by his parents, or any other gods except for Aphrodite, he is his most loyal lover. This god is associated with violence and war in all its ugly forms. He is the god who causes bloodshed, violence, indiscriminate murder, and destruction of human life.
Ares was a war god
Ares was ancient Greece's war god. He represented the most barbaric and violent aspects of war. He was also the brother of Athena, the goddess of honor and goodwill. Although Ares was the god of war, the Greeks believed that he could also help individuals in their personal battles.
He was a lover of Aphrodite
The god Ares was the son of Zeus and Hera. He was associated to war, death, and boundaries. He loved women. In one of the Greek myths, Ares and Aphrodite had a secret love affair. Ares, however, was not a popular Greek god. Hephaestus, his father, held Ares in contempt.

He was a bloodthirsty, ferocious warrior
Ares, the god of war, was a bloodthirsty maniac, and he thrived on destruction. He was worshiped by the Greeks since 1200 BC. He was born in Thrace. His people were very fearsome. Ares' bloodthirsty nature made him a difficult god to worship and led to many defeats in battle. He was also often put into a pan by giants and was frequently the victim of Athena’s fury.
He was the symbol for indiscriminate slaughter
Ares was the Greek god and warrior Ares. In mythology, he was the one who broke through the shield and sacked the city. He represented the more violent side of battle and was the opposite of Athena, who represents a more strategic way of war. Ares was a strong god. He was frequently pictured with his brothers Phobos & Deimos as well as his sister Eris. His symbols are a sword and a spear. He is also associated the boar and vulture as well as dead carcasses.
He was defeated by Athena
Athena and Ares fought and fell on one another, with a vast sea thundering behind them. Under their immortal feet, the earth creaked beneath them. Their battle-cries rose across the sky, from the high heavens to Hades’ abyss to the lowlands. Both gods, and men, shrieked in pain.
He was admired by Spartan warriors
Spartan life was centred around the powerful Spartan army. To begin military training, boys as young seven-years old can leave their home. There was no other profession or education for them. The Spartans worshipped Ares, who was a symbol of Sparta’s values. The city was home to a statue of Ares in chains.

He is also the Roman god Mars’ ancestor
Ares is the ancestor of the god Mars, who was the father of the founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus. While Ares was loathed by most gods he was loved by Aphrodite. Aphrodite preferred handsome Ares to her mortal husband, Hephaestus.
