greek mythology characters

Jainism is an Indian religion that emphasizes human limitations and the inability or truth to be objective. The parable of five blind men and an elephant is a common example. Each man touches different parts and comes to a different conclusion. Every blind man sees the animal differently and has a different view.

Rituals

Jainism's religious rituals are often intertwined into daily life. The religiously pious may perform acts such giving alms or scattering seeds for birds. Other rituals include boiling water and filtering. A notable ritual is the samayika, or meditative renunciation ritual. The ritual lasts approximately 48 minutes and involves quiet reflection and repeated prayers.

Vegetarianism

Vegetarianism is a form of Jainism that is based on non-violence. Jain doctrine says that violence is detrimental to any living thing. Jains abstain from violence and limit their intakes. Additionally, Jains avoid the use of fire and animal husbandry as well as any other poisonous material. Traditionally, Jains are primarily merchants.

Reincarnation

Reincarnation is a key theme in Jainism and Buddhism as well as Hinduism and Buddhism. These religions believe the quality of our past lives can affect our future reincarnations. Both Hinduism as well as Buddhism stress the importance of practicing virtuous behaviors to influence our future incarnations. Different virtues are discussed, called Yamas and Niyamas. These virtues include nonviolence, compassion and respect for all living creatures.

Holidays

Jainism has many holidays. The most well-known one is Diwali, which is celebrated by Jains across the world. While most people know Diwali simply as the Festival of Lights for their eyes, there's more to it. It has become more of a practice than a holiday in the modern world.

The core teachings of religion

Jainism is an independent philosophy, despite its Hindu roots. Jain belief holds that humans possess all five senses, and therefore are aware about the world around them. Humans have memory and can infer from the world around them, along with five senses. This comprehensive set of senses allows humans knowledge about every aspect of life, including human condition.
