Homer's Homeric Hymn to Demeter

Homer's Homeric Hymns is a collection 33 hymns to gods, written in Greek. These hymns follow the same dialect of the Iliad as the Odyssey and have epic meters. They are among the most recognizable pieces of ancient Greek literature.

The Homeric Hymn to Demeter deals with the loss of Demeter's daughter, Persephone. Cronos, Persephone’s dad, had set up a marriage between Hades and Persephone, and the earth was opened after Persephone passed away so that Hades might return from beneath.

Homer's Oedipusrex

Oedipus summons Tiresias, the blind prophet, to tell Homer's Oedipus. Tiresias claims to know the answer to Oedipus's questions but refuses to speak. Oedipus then hears the story and goes into deep denial. He accuses Tiresias for being complicit with Laius’s murder. Oedipus believes that Creon paid Tiresias for this.


Oedipus rex is a Greek tragedy that dates back to the fourth century BC. The play begins when Oedipus, Thebes' king, sends Creon to Delphi to question the oracle about a plague plaguing Thebes. According to the oracle the plague is caused because of the unsolved Murder of Laius. Oedipus vows therefore to find Laius, and solve the plague.

Homer's Orpheus

Homer's Iliad was the first time Orpheus, a Greek mythology figure, appeared in Homer in the 7th Century BCE. His story ends in the ninth century CE. He was a mortal, sometimes demigod, but he was also a human who was later married to Eurydice the sea nymph.

A classic example is the Orpheus tale. Homer describes the process in the Iliad, and the Odyssey of rebirth. He also explains the function of the Moirae daughters. The Orphic stories can be layered over the Homeric description the afterlife.

Homer's Eurydice

Homer's Eurydice a classical Greek myth is about a mortal, female nymph and their love affair with Orpheus. The story starts in the 7th Century BCE, when Eurydice appears for the first time in Homer’s Iliad. It ends in the 9th century BCE. Eurydice married Orpheus and was the daughter Apollo.

Eurydice fell in a love with Orpheus. The two were eventually married. Orpheus broke his promise that he would never look back. After leaving Eurydice he attempted to return to the Underworld to ask for the life of Eurydice. But he arrived to find that Hades had closed the door on Hades. He was unable to sing and could not enter.
